- About Nkiruka Wellness
Together for a Better Future
Nkiruka is an Igbo word that means “the future is better.” It’s a name full of hope and a promise we carry into every program, every partnership, and every community we serve.
Nkiruka Wellness is a Black woman-led public health organization committed to improving health literacy, expanding access to care, and eliminating health disparities that disproportionately affect underserved communities. With a special focus on African-American and African immigrant communities, we work at the intersection of public health, cultural belonging, and social justice.
We believe every person deserves access to accurate health information and the resources to act on it – regardless of where they live, what they earn, or who they are.

- OUR STORY
How We Started
Nkiruka Wellness was founded by Nnenne Asi, MPH – a seasoned Nigerian American public health professional, Youth Tobacco Treatment Coordinator, and National Youth Director of the Abiriba Communal Improvement Union (ACIU). With more than a decade of combined experience in public health consultation, community organizing, and health education, Nnenne built Nkiruka Wellness to fill a critical gap: culturally responsive health programs that speak directly to the communities that need them most.
Â
Our operations span North Carolina, U.S.A. and Abiriba, Nigeria – two very different contexts connected by a shared reality: that structural barriers, limited resources, and cultural disconnects prevent too many people from accessing the care and knowledge they deserve.
- OUR STORY
Meet Nnenne Asi, MPH
Nnenne Asi is a Nigerian American public health professional whose career has been defined by a belief that community is the foundation of health. As a Youth Tobacco Treatment Coordinator, she has helped young people break cycles of addiction.
As National Youth Director of the Abiriba Communal Improvement Union, she has leveraged trusted community relationships to deliver programming that resonates. As the founder of Nkiruka Wellness, she is building an organization that reflects the communities it serves in leadership, in language, and in love.
- OUR FOUR PILLARS
What Guides Us
Health Literacy
We believe informed communities are empowered communities. Our educational programs cover anatomy, reproductive wellness, tobacco prevention, consent, and preventive care, delivered in culturally aligned, accessible formats.
Access
We don't just educate - we act. From distributing menstrual cups and reusable pads to establishing a free supply closet at a rural maternity ward, we remove the material barriers that stand between people and good health.
Empowerment
The communities we serve are not passive recipients of health services - they are experts in their own lives. We center their voices, support their leadership, and design programs that reflect their lived realities.
Community Engagement
Lasting change doesn't happen from the outside in. We work alongside community leaders, cultural organizations, local health workers, churches, and schools to build solutions that are sustainable, trusted, and genuinely community-owned.
- WHERE WE WORK
Our Reach
Nkiruka Wellness operates in two primary areas:
Â
- North Carolina, USA – Providing health education to students and families in charter schools, churches, and cultural organizations. Programming includes youth tobacco prevention and cessation, sexual health education, and broader health topics.
Â
- Abiriba, Abia State, Nigeria – Implementing reproductive health and menstrual equity programs in a rural area with limited health infrastructure and significant period poverty. Since 2021, our programs have reached over 250 women and girls.
